What Is Microsoft SQL Server?

The Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system designed to provide businesses with the tools to store, organize, analyze, and report on data. Beyond that, it provides for businesses to run powerful business intelligence programs that discover new insights lurking in the data. These can then be quickly spread across the server for optimal benefit.

What Is a CAL license?

A CAL, or client access license, provides access to a Microsoft SQL Server. With a CAL, an individual can enjoy all of the features on the server. A CAL can be used for any version of the Microsoft SQL Server, including the Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter editions, but it can only be used to access one server. CALs come in two forms: user and device.

What Is a Device CAL?

While a User CAL provides access to a user on any device, a Device CAL, like the one sold in this product, provides access to one licensed device, which can be used by any user. That provides optimal flexibility for businesses looking to keep certain devices regularly connected which can then be shared.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Is Not included in This Purchase

This product is a Device CAL that allows a device to access an already installed and running Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Features

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 provides incredible analysis and reporting enhancements over every edition that came previously. Particularly in the Enterprise and Datacenter editions, there are new, powerful tools that provide up-to-date data with the best analysis available anywhere.

Access to more processor cores—Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, particularly in the Enterprise edition, allows for far more scalability, thanks to the vast expansion of processor cores. The Enterprise edition can have up to 64 processors and 256 cores.

PowerPivot for Excel—PowerPivot is one of the biggest upgrades in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. In fact, it has remained ever since one of the most powerful tools available on the SQL Server. It works through Excel to provide users with incredible analysis tools. With built-in compression, PowerPivot can work almost instantaneously, even when it is calculating over millions of rows of data. One of the most impressive features is the ability for PowerPivot to reach out beyond Excel, to use data from different databases, and even from other data sources, such as Oracle, Teradata, or reports. PowerPivot is available in Enterprise and more advanced editions.

PowerPivot for SharePoint—PowerPivot’s advances aren’t limited to Excel and business intelligence. It also works with SharePoint to provide a means to share business-critical Excel documents. More important than sharing, though, PowerPivot for SharePoint provides a location where these files can be saved, backed up, and managed to avoid accidental deletion or corruption. Like PowerPivot for Excel above, PowerPivot for SharePoint is available in Enterprise and more advanced editions.

Multiserver management—Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 improves on the SQL Server Management Studio found in earlier editions and makes it much easier to run multiple servers. There are now new wizards and dashboards that provide new capabilities while also walking administrators through the process. Using the new Utility Explorer, you can run and control up to 25 SQL Server instances. Once again, this feature is only available on Enterprise and more advanced editions.

Master Data Services—One major problem that businesses come across all the time with their database is that the same information exists across the server in different forms. Data that needs to work together is found in different applications and business units. In previous editions, that meant the data simply couldn’t communicate together. Now, Master Data Services has the key. It creates a master definition for the data and then converts all the different sources to that definition. This not only provides for converting data, it also provides a key for all those working with data. It will send out notifications to those who are violating the data rules set in Master Data Services, thus continuing to keep your data consistent. As with the programs above, it is available only in the Enterprise and more advanced editions.

StreamInsight—Perhaps the most advanced feature in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, StreamInsight helps capture almost real-time data changes. It can process thousands of events per second, and is ideal for businesses that work, for example, with stock exchange data. It is only available in the Datacenter edition.

Report Builder 3.0—Report Builder has become a key ally in developing reports for companies in every type of business, and the third release will only help to continue that trend. This version includes the ribbon found in all Office programs to more easily guide users to the features the need. It also integrates geospatial data (that first became available in the 2008 R1 version), and even includes a map wizard. You can also create report parts that can be reused in later reports.

System Requirements

There are no specific system requirements for a device to access the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, however, keeping devices up-to-date and running compatible operating systems will help ensure the ability to enjoy all the features of the server.
