What Is RDS?

RDS stands for Remote Desktop Server, which is a part of the Microsoft Server that allows users to access the server remotely and to enjoy features similar to devices that are terminally based. With the Remote Desktop Server, users can access databases, files, programs, communication features, and other server features as quickly and efficiently as if they were connected directly to the server.

The RDS system allows a business to accommodate various schedules and keep all users with server access connected at all times and locations, increasing connectivity, communication, collaboration, and therefore, overall business efficiency and productivity.

 What Are CALs?

CAL stands for client access license. A CAL allows someone to access the server and enjoy its features. They come in two forms: device and user.

What Are User CALs?

While a Device CAL allows one licensed device to access the server, a User CAL allows the same for one licensed user. That licensed user can access the server from any device. This is an ideal option for those who expect to access the server from multiple devices, for instance, through their smartphone, tablet, laptop, and at-work desktop.

Microsoft Server 2008 R2 RDS Features

Microsoft Server 2008 R2 RDS provides all of the classic features users of a server need, such as remote access and data backup, while also providing more efficiency in virtualization and power usage, and better communication and collaboration features than ever before.

Also, it is now easier and quicker to transfer virtual machines and to administer the server.

Back up PC data and the server data—For most businesses, data is its most important resource. To avoid the nightmare scenario of severe data loss, the Microsoft Server 2008 R2 RDS allows you to back up the data on all the computers connected to the server, and also to backup data on the server. That way, you can quickly and easily restore all lost data, no matter if the cause was malware, hacking, or hardware failure.

More efficient power usage—The new Core Parking features makes it possible to suspend idol cores, significantly reducing power usage by the server. The suspended cores can be reactivated in milliseconds when needed.

SharePoint collaboration—SharePoint provides the ability to share documents with colleagues. Combined with features like Exchange (explained below), collaboration becomes vastly more streamlined. SharePoint also coordinates calendars and lets you create wikis, surveys, and other documents that allow you to spread new information quickly across the whole server.

Exchange communication features—With business email and business calendar abilities through Exchange and Outlook Web Access, everyone on the server can communicate more efficiently with colleagues and clients. Outlook Web Access also makes it possible to connect to business email on any device, since it can be reached through any major browser.

More powerful virtualization with Hyper-V—Hyper-V has expanded power and abilities. Virtualization sees a marked upgrade throughout the server (as seen in Core Parking and Live Migration, above and below respectively), and Hyper-V itself also sees an expanded ability to address up to 32 cores per virtual machines.  Each virtual machine has access to 64 GB, and the sum total can reach up to 1 TB of physical memory. Further, thanks to Cluster

Shared Volumes, a virtual machine has complete mobility throughout a cluster, while it also allows more virtual machines to be accessible on a disk.

Live Migration—Live Migration provides even more Hyper-V capabilities with the ability to transfer virtual machines between hosts with no disconnections or downtime. This allows the virtual machine to transfer memory, network connections, and storage along with it.

Avoid accidental deletion with Recycle Bin—Finally, just like more operating systems,

Microsoft Server 2008 R2 RDS makes sure accidentally deleted data isn’t gone forever. The new Recycle Bin allows you to browse deleted items and either return them to the server or permanently delete them.

Security advances—The Microsoft Server 2008 R2 gets several key security upgrades, including new encryption features and Domain Name System Security Extension.

Administer remotely with PowerShell 2.0—Just like users, administrators are now free from local connections, thanks to PowerShell 2.0. Execute cmdlets and run background programs from anywhere. Also, PowerShell 2.0 provides improved debugging.

Streamline administrative tasks with Active Directory—Previous editions of the Microsoft Server had various locations that hosted administrative duties that has all been combined into the Active Directory. This umbrella directory makes it easier to find a particular task and to complete it without time-wasting searches around the server.
