Windows Embedded is an embedded operating systems product group made by Microsoft. An embedded operating system is a specialised operating system in the computers built into larger systems, meaning it's part of a different kind of machine. Examples of this are computers in cars, traffic lights, digital equipment such as televisions and cameras, and navigation systems. In contrast to a general-purpose computer, an embedded operating system has limited functions depending on the device it's installed on.

Windows Embedded Standard is the brand of Windows Embedded operating systems that enables enterprises and device manufacturers to pick and choose which capabilities will be part of their industry devices and systems. It was developed for creating industry-specific devices such as ATMs, healthcare devices and manufacturing machines. This brand consists of Windows XP Embedded, Windows NT 4.0 Embedded, WES09, Windows Embedded Standard 7 and Windows Embedded 8 Standard. It comes with the full Win32 API as well.

Windows Embedded Standard 2009 incorporates software and features such as .NET Framework 3.5, Internet Explorer 7, Silverlight, Windows Media Player 11, RDP 6.1, Network Access Protection, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer. It also supports management by Windows Server Update Services and System Center Configuration Manager.

A newer version, Windows Embedded Standard 7, is based on Windows 7 and includes Windows Vista features as well. Some of these include but are not limited to Aero, ReadyBoost, Windows Defender, SuperFetch, Silverlight 2 among several other packages. It's available in IA-32 and x64 versions and requires product activation.
