Microsoft Office 2007 Professional Upgrade

For decades now, Microsoft Office has dominated the industry in providing the world’s most premier business solutions and application software. Needing no introduction, users all over the globe are experienced and familiar with Microsoft’s popular offerings such as Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word. With this 2007 edition, Microsoft gives its familiar user interface a facelift, updates file formats, and boosts security functions.

Perhaps one of the most prominent updates for the ever popular Office package 2007 makes it easier than ever to navigate, work, and create useful business documentation, store data, and manage communications all in one convenient suite. The Ribbon gets introduced, which makes user interactions even more intuitive. A new user interface engine, “Fluent UI” powers insightful and relevant commands throughout the ribbon, right-click commands, and more. New file types reduce file sizes and close backdoors for macro-based malware. With this 2007 upgrade, Microsoft checks all the right boxes, upgrading things that desperately needed refreshing, while not damaging any of the fan favorites that users know and love.

Users recognize Microsoft for being the industry leader in business applications and expect each new iteration to come with useful upgrades and improvements, all while keeping the functions and commands that are frequently used without detrimental or awkward change.  Users associate everyday tasks with Microsoft products, such as Outlook for email communication, Word for document creation and word processing, Excel for spreadsheet and data management, and Powerpoint for presentations.

Office 2007 refreshes all of these staples in business with a seamless user interface, smaller file sizes, and more connectivity between users. It’s now easier than ever to share files, despite the newer formats, Microsoft made it a point to make this a smooth transition. Of course, these new file formats are the standard, but it remains compatible with older editions.

What’s Different about This Edition?

The first change users will notice will be the Ribbon, Microsoft’s new user interface that includes familiar drop-down menus, but adds intuitive suggestions when selecting a command. A great example of this would be highlighting text, changing the font color to red while Microsoft pulls up a few other formatting options for you such as font selections, font sizes, or stylizations. Bullets and Numbering are also included, so if you create a list and select it, you’ll see a library of template options for bullet formatting with different bullet styles, choices, and sizes. Word, Excel, and Outlook are the most glaring example of these new changes, but these new functions can be found on all Microsoft Office options now. The Ribbon gives users a place up top to see these suggested commands, right next to the all familiar drop-down menus.

Right-clicking text, data, or content selections give users suggestions as well with the help of the new Fluent UI. Fluent relies on user activity for suggestions. So if you’re an editor who frequently uses red text, underlining, and other stylizations, you will see your commonly used commands on the ribbon or suggested when you select content. While the Ribbon at release had a few gripes on appearance and awkward placement of specific commands or buttons, new updates have improved these issues.

.XML File Extensions

File Formats will be the next thing users will notice with the Office 2007 launch. Now when you download a file, you’ll notice an “x” file extension. Files will change from .doc to .docx or their application file name equivalents. Why the change? For one, it reduces file sizes. The “x” represents .xml files, which are compressed and take up half the storage space as their older Office 2003 counterparts. Sometimes, depending on the file (such as a text file), sizes may be even closer to a quarter of their older filetype forefathers.

Another reason for this file change, despite easier storage with smaller file sizes and better sharing capabilities, is security. Older file types had backdoors open with their macro features, but the new file types eliminate those backdoors and make intrusions and malware infections through this vector even less of a possibility. Microsoft, while making this significant change, made it a point to establish compatibility with older editions and file types as smooth as possible by making newer file formats readable on older versions, and vice versa. And with more modern editions, you can read and edit old file extensions and easily convert to the newer format.

Outlook

Outlook gets anti-phishing countermeasures that recognize and block malicious communications coming into your inbox. This means a less cluttered inbox and reduces the possibility of clicking on a malicious link to improve cybersecurity. Outlook also gets a new to-do bar, that shows your upcoming tasks, events, and meetings that are in your outlook schedule.

Enhanced Graphics

For all applications, libraries for images, modeling, graphs, and other graphical representations are expanded giving users more options when creating documents. Themes and templates now are synced across various applications, so if you want charts and graphs from an Excel workbook that you’re importing to PowerPoint, you can keep the formatting and themes consistent across platforms.

Why Upgrade to Office 2007 Professional?

Office 2007 is the wave of the future for Microsoft. Many of the features and functions introduced in this iteration remain relevant more than 20 years later and serve as the backbone for other editions that have come out later. File types and extensions are now deemed more secure, more compatible with other software (like Adobe’s Acrobat Reader), and better for data management and backups with smaller file sizes. The look for Office 2007 has remained a staple in Microsoft’s DNA, expanding to other products and services. Don’t consider this a purchase for your business, but rather an investment.
